The Pine Mountain 40 Mile Trail Run is quickly approaching, and we need volunteers to make it go smoothly. Specific needs are:

• Saturday, Dec 5: Course marking in the afternoon.
• Sunday, Dec 6: Aid station workers.

You only have a couple more weeks to register for the Pine Mountain 40 Mile Trail run in order to guarantee you finisher’s vest size. We have to order the vest no later than November 3! All registrants after that will simply have to get what’s left…IF there ARE any left! Seriously, if you’re planning on running it, you’d better get registered!

On Saturday, October 10, GUTS member Sean Blanton is running from downtown Athens to Piedmont Park in Atlanta, 87 miles for 8 year old Carter who is battling Leukemia. Sean is raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help find cures and help treat others stricken with these diseases. Online registration for the 2009 Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12 Mile run will be available until noon on Friday, October 9. While your shirt size cannot be guaranteed, a fun day on the trails is almost a given! Race day registration will also be available if the race hasn’t filled.

Does your idea of fun include camping and helping others? Well then GUTS has just the thing for you! The Pinhoti 100 will be held on November 7-8 in the Talledega National Forest. Last year, GUTS members manned two aid station: one in the early part of the race, and another that stayed open all night long. We’ll be doing the same thing this year and we know you’ll want to help out.

All volunteers will get a Pinhoti 100 tshirt, lots of karma points, and that feel-good feeling from helping out. If you’re interested, please email getguts@hotmail.com with the subject line “I’ll Help @ Pinhoti”.

The monthly Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve Workday will be this Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon. At least 10 volunteers are needed to help with placing sections of the boardwalk back on the cement block supports following the flooding last week. Additional projects will be clearing flood debris, removing invasive plants and mulching trails. Be sure to bring work gloves and a water bottle! Be sure to bring work gloves and a water bottle!

Editor’s Note: For those of you wondering why we’re posting this announcement, the Preserve has hosted the Hot to Trot 8 Hour run for the past 3 years.

On Wednesday, September 30, we are having a MMM sign-up party at the Sandy Springs Phidippides store. We will offer $5 off to anyone who registers for the race that night! Start with a run at 6:15 pm. After, Phidippides will be giving away cool prizes, and yummy snacks and beverages.

You still have time to register for the Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12 Mile Trail Run, but you’d better hurry! The race will take place on Sunday, October 11 @ Fort Mountain State Park. Mail in entries must be postmarked by October 1. So if you’ve been procrastinating, it’s time to get moving! You can now register for the 2009 Pine Mountain Trail Run. The 40 mile ultra marathon will be held on Sunday, December 6 on the beautiful Pine Mountain Trail system of FDR State Park. This GUTS event will test your endurance and your ankles over rocky single-track trails. The trail follows the ridge line, going up and over it for the duration. Depending on water levels, the few water crossings could be dry or ankle deep. You’ll experience both pine & hardwood forests, rock outcroppings, waterfalls, beaver ponds, and CCC fish hatcheries.
